Happy National Lipstick Day!!
My Favorite Lipstick Colors, Textures, and Formulas for Any Age
I have been seeing an increasing number of mothers-of-the-bride/groom and grandmothers-of-the-bride/groom getting their hair and makeup done with the rest of the bridal party. I have to say this is a change from when I first started doing makeup and it would be just the bride and the bridal party. Let’s face it, everyone loves to be pampered a little bit, dress up and feel beautiful! Mothers and grandmothers are no exception! I keep my kit well stocked with makeup appropriate for any age and because today is national lipstick day, I thought I would share some of my favorites!
These are my favorite lipsticks for anyone- any age.
They feel nice on, the texture is pretty, the colors are beautiful on a variety of skin tones, and they photograph really well.

Milani
Albeit
Tarte
Charlotte Tilbury
YSL
L.A. Girl
My Favorite Lip Glosses:

My Favorite Lipstick Colors with Swatches
Milani: Nude Crème (#26), Naturally Chic (#25)
Both of these are Rose-Nude colors and are the most used in my professional kit. Naturally chic is more red-based rose and slightly darker than Nude Crème. Nude Crème is a more traditional nude (for fairer skin tones). The texture of these is creamy, there is no shimmer or frost. It does have a natural shine level that I like without causing too much creamy-ness that will cause the color to run or melt.
Tarte: Joy, Pouty
Tarte Joy is another kit favorite, this lipstick is a little more balm-y feeling that lipstick feeling. It has a nice refreshing minty scent and flavor. These colors are more sheer and can be layered for a bolder look. Joy appears orange, but goes on your lips with the most beautiful pink-y flushed color. Pouty is a red-pink and has a slight shimmer to it, but still sheer. I like to use Pouty on those clients who want a punch of bolder color without an opaque color payoff.
Albeit: Peony, Violette
I will be honest, the packaging of these lipstick tubes are what got me trying this brand. they were encased in a heavy gold-tone old fashioned lipstick tube. I thought it was such a nice touch to include in my touch-up kits for my brides. I was happily impressed that the color payoff and limited colors they had looked beautiful on many skin tones and age ranges. While the packaging on these has changed the lipsticks are still lovely and have the added bonus of being packed with hydrating oils, vitamin E and are easily layered for just a wash of color or a bolder color payoff. Peony is a medium blue-base pink and Violette is darker and richer with a rosier purple tone.
Charlotte Tilbury: Bitch Perfect, Secret Salma, Pillow Talk, Princess Kiss
Charlotte Tilbury Emerged on the Scene here in the US only a few short years ago, but I love her stuff it feels so glamorous, girly, and extravagant. This is a similar situation with Albeit, where the packaging caught my eyes. I was at a beauty show a few years ago and gushed over the packaging, but once I played with some of the products I knew I at least needed to stock up for my personal use. Now a lot of her stuff it in my kit! I personally love the dewy glow-y sheer Super Star Lips, but I will admit that the color doesn’t last very well, I use the color Princess Kiss and I think it is so beautiful for a wash of sheer glossy color to wear everyday. For my kit and my clients I prefer the longer lasting K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipsticks- these are buildable satin lipsticks. Pillow Talk is a brown based rose. I find it to be a touch too brown for me, but on slightly tanner skin tones it is a beautiful nude. They also make a Pillow Talk Medium for darker skin tones- but I have not tried it yet. Bitch Perfect is a lighter shade than Pillow talk and slightly more tan than pink or brown. Secret Salma is more of a true rose and is one of my more used colors.
YSL: Waterstains and Rougue Volupte Shine
The Waterstains leave a sheer wash of glossy stain on your lips. They are slightly sticky, but I like the color payoff and the lasting power enough for me to deal with the slightly tacky sensation. The Volupte Shines are a shiny balm-y texture and also provide a sheer wash of color that I love so much. They are more glossy than the Charlotte Tilbury Super Star Lips. The colors I have are: Rosewood Glow (606), Nude Lavalliere (44), Misty Pink, and Faubourg Peach.
L.A. Girl: Glazed Super Intense Color
These inexpensive little beauties have great color payoff and dry down to an almost semi-matte finish (although the tube says “extra glossy finish”, I don’t find that to be true when using a lip brush). I don’t typically recommend matte lipsticks, especially for more mature clients- but these liquid lipsticks retain just enough satin finish not to look dry and chalky on the lips. I have about 7 different colors of these and mix them often to get that customized “just right” color for a lot of clients. These also have a slightly minty smell and taste like Tarte does. My most used shades are: Whimsical, Peony, Blushing, and Babydoll.
Lipliners and Lip Glosses:
I can go into a whole other post about what is in my kit and what are my favorites, but the lip liners that I use most in my kit are the Rimmel Liners in 032 (fair nude) and 018 (rose nude). Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liners in Bitten Kiss (rose nude) and Pillow Talk (Rose). I have almost every shade of Urban Decay’s nude colored liners, they are so smooth and don’t feather. For glosses, I really like the Jouer Tinted Lip Enhancers for a moisturizing lip treatment with just a hint of color. I usually layer them over another lipstick if I want more of a glossy effect. I also like the NYX Lip Butters, they have a little more colors and are so inexpensive I don’t mind buying every fun color they make!
Do you have a favorite brand of lipstick or favorite lipstick shade? What textures are your favorite?
Thank you for reading!
